Henry County Court Record Requests
The Henry County Circuit Clerk keeps the official files. Criminal, civil, domestic-relations, child-support, traffic, juvenile, small-claims, and warrant divisions all sit in that office. How you ask depends on your goal. Reading a docket, opening a filed document, getting a certified copy, or tracking down an older file each call for a different request.
- Use paid Just One Look for selected-case details and available images, or an existing Alacourt subscription.
- Inspect public Circuit and District electronic dockets and available court records at Suite J without a viewing charge.
- Call (334) 585-2753 to confirm the division, file location, current setting, copy estimate, and older-file retrieval.
- Visit or mail Henry County Circuit Clerk, 101 Court Square, Suite J, Abbeville, AL 36310-2135.
- Submit a focused written request if required, then prepay quoted copy charges and requester-paid postage.
A strong request spells out the details. Include the case number and style, the court or division, the document title and docket date, whether you want plain or certified copies, the quantity, the delivery format, pickup or mailing, and your contact information, plus your willingness to pay. Alabama's resident public-record request form is a good model of that specificity. Still, no form can override judicial confidentiality rules.
Three Henry County Record Layers
Three layers, three purposes. The docket, sometimes called "case details," is the chronological index of a Henry County case. It lists dates, brief event descriptions, parties, settings, and the outcome. A filed image is the actual paper behind an entry. That paper may be the complaint, motion, order, or judgment itself. A certified copy reproduces the original in the clerk's file. It carries the custodian's signature or seal.
| Layer | What it provides | Access route |
|---|---|---|
| Docket / case details | Case header and chronological entries | Just One Look or free Suite J inspection |
| Filed document | The text of a pleading, notice, or ruling | Available image or exact-document clerk request |
| Certified copy | Clerk-authenticated reproduction | Quote, request, payment, pickup or mail |
Start with the Henry County docket search to locate the case. Then use the entry date and document title to narrow what you ask the clerk for.
Kinds of Court Records
Circuit Court files cover felonies, major civil matters, domestic relations, and appeals. Those appeals are tried anew from lower courts. District Court records hold misdemeanors, preliminary felony work, state traffic, small claims, juvenile matters, and other limited-jurisdiction cases. Some categories carry tighter access rules than others.
Docket sheets, complaints or petitions, answers, motions, service returns, notices of setting, orders, judgments, and appeal entries are commonly public. Criminal files may show public charge, bond, plea, disposition, and sentencing entries. Civil files can include claim, service, judgment, garnishment, and enforcement records. A transcript is a different animal. It must be ordered from the official court reporter under the applicable schedule.
Estate, guardianship, name-change, marriage, election, and land-record matters belong to the Henry County Probate Judge. City ordinance and municipal traffic files sit with the Abbeville and Headland municipal clerks. Match your request to the court named on the original paper.
Henry County Clerk Record Custody
Kim Roland is the current clerk. Her official Circuit Clerk page describes the office as record keeper and business manager for District and Circuit proceedings. The office receives pleadings, images records, issues subpoenas and notices, and collects court money. Even with AOC storing electronic data centrally, that local role holds steady. The page shows how Henry County presents these duties online.

Remote Alacourt access still leads back to the custodian, who handles inspection, copies, certification, and older-file help.

Court Records: What They Contain
A file grows from a case header and a chronological docket. One entry may link to an image. Another records an event with no remotely available document behind it. Read the index and the filed order together. Short labels can leave out why a ruling was made. They can also omit the terms that bind the parties.
| Case identity | County, court, division, 37-CV-2023-900053-style number, filing date, type, and status |
|---|---|
| Participants | Public party roles and counsel, subject to privacy limits |
| Pleadings | Complaint, petition, answer, motion, response, and service documents |
| Settings | Notices, dates, continuances, docket calls, hearings, and trials |
| Rulings | Orders, judgment, disposition, sentence, or dismissal as applicable |
| Later activity | Appeal, postjudgment motion, garnishment, costs, or enforcement |
Henry's official garnishment publication confirms that postjudgment work can continue below the original judgment. A garnishment notice is enforcement activity, not a new ruling on the original claim.
Missing Henry County Document Images
Electronic imaging does not put every old file online. Some images are excluded from paid access. Others are restricted. If an image is missing, write down the exact docket date and the event wording. Add the document number if one displays. Give those details to Suite J and ask whether the item is electronic, paper, archived, or held elsewhere.
The clerk may want a written request and payment before releasing anything. Rule 31 governs maintenance and central storage. Official sources support no promise that every old paper survives or has been scanned. No fixed Henry County turnaround is published either. Retrieval time turns on the file, its restrictions, staff workload, and payment.
Note: a missing remote image does not prove nothing was filed. The docket entry and clerk's record must still be checked.
Copy Fees and Certification
A plain copy works fine for reading and reference. A receiving court or agency may insist on a certified copy to prove authenticity. Under Alabama Rule of Judicial Administration 30, certification is available only when the original is filed or recorded. An electronic signature and seal may be used. Before ordering, ask the receiving institution which form it accepts.
| Item | Official Henry County result |
|---|---|
| In-office public viewing | No charge under the 2025 court-record access rules |
| Plain clerk copy | Fee set by AOC directive; local amount not posted, so call for a quote |
| Certification | Available for an original on file; local surcharge not posted |
| Mail delivery | Requester pays postage; advance payment may be required |
| Archival search | Clerk may perform and charge for it, but is not required to do so |
| Just One Look | Paid selected-case access; current price was not visible on the official pre-purchase screen |
Parties and government entities may get discretionary no-charge copies under Rule 30. That provision is not a general fee waiver. Request a written quote that separates copying, certification, search work, and postage.
Access Rules for Court Records
Two Alabama rules govern how open a Henry County court docket file really is. Rule 30 lets anyone inspect court files for free. That right holds unless a law, rule, or order seals, exempts, or restricts the material. Rule 31 keeps the clerk in charge of the records. It also bars protected identifying details from public compilations. Free viewing at the clerk's office sits on one side of the line. The 2025 Alabama privacy rules draw that line clearly. They treat remote subscriber access as something separate from free in-person inspection.
Public does not mean unrestricted. Juvenile, adoption-related, protected domestic, sealed, and personal-identifier content may be withheld or redacted. A public-record request does not cancel a sealing order.
Two tools limit what the public sees. Redaction hides protected content but keeps the item itself on the docket. Sealing goes further and shuts off the item or the whole file. Ask the Henry County clerk which portion stays public in a given case, since anything beyond it may call for proof of authority or a court order. No statewide ID rule applies to ordinary public copies. Identity can still matter for restricted material.
Henry County Transcripts Use Another Route
A docket sheet proves a hearing or trial happened. It does not capture the words spoken there. The court reporter makes the official record, and that reporter prepares transcripts for appeals or other authorized uses. So skip the clerk for this one. Contact the reporter assigned to the judge and the proceeding instead of asking for a docket sheet turned into a transcript.
The Henry County reporter posts no local price list. Cost follows the governing reporter schedule along with the transcript's length and type, so supply the case number, judge, proceeding date, and hearing type when you ask for a quote. Before ordering a full transcript, consider a cheaper route. A filed order or minute entry may already answer a narrow question.
Federal and Henry County Records Differ
Henry County sits inside the Dothan Division of the U.S. District Court. That court belongs to the Middle District of Alabama. Federal civil and criminal cases there run on NextGen CM/ECF and PACER. The Henry County Circuit Clerk's Alacourt track has nothing to do with them. Bankruptcy works the same way. A federal case number looks different too, something like 1:26-cv-00609. The Middle District of Alabama site shows the federal court's own docket system.

A Henry County address or party does not by itself put a case in federal court. For federal docket and document access, the national PACER service is the route.

PACER needs an account and charges federal fees. It holds no Alabama Circuit, District, municipal, or Probate Court records.
